DMV Salutes 9/11 Runners Completing 485-Mile Second-Annual "Run for Remembrance" from Shanksville to DC to Ground Zero

Community Event in DC/Old Town Alexandria VA: Battered but Inspired: 35 Runners From 20+ States Finish U.S.'s Longest Relay in 2025, 4th longest in the world

ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Sept. 20, 2025 - PRLog -- The Old Town Run Club invites the media and public to Alexandria's Market Square on Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2025 when the all-volunteer organizers and 9/11 Runners – with flags and wearing commemorative T2T shirts – will be congratulated by Alexandrians and the DMV community, including service members, veterans, and first responders.

The 9/11 "Run for Remembrance" team will start at Weds 9/24 at 7 p.m. from Murphy's Grand Irish Pub, 713 King St., Alexandria, VA


Celebrate the 9/11 Team's 485-Mile Inspiring Journey to Mark the 24th Anniversary of the Sept 11, 2001, attacks and raise funds for fallen military and first responders
  • Meet & Photo-Op
    9/11 Runners will be available for interviews and footage of their victory lap through Market Square at 7 p.m., followed by a community celebration at Murphy's Grand Irish Pub (713 King St, Alexandria).

  • About the second-annual "9/11 Run for Remembrance"
    An all-volunteer group of 35 runners from 20+ states completed an inspiring 485-mile relay. The fourth-longest running relay in 2025 began at the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, PA, ran through Washington DC, and concluded at Ground Zero, New York City, on September 11.

  • Community and Local Support
    Throughout the 60+ communities along the 485-miles, local residents, military, veterans, first-responders, and hundreds of supporters greeted the custom 9/11 flag and runners along the route, which included salutes from dozens of fire and police stations, police escorts, and support from 75+ local businesses.

  • Fundraising for Tunnel to Towers Foundation
    To date, the Old Town Run Club has raised more than $50,000 for the Tunnel to Towers Foundation (T2T.org), honoring the sacrifices of 9/11 responders, military, and Gold Star families. Donations of any size are welcomed at dogood.t2t.org/OldTownRunClub25.

  • One of the Most Challenging Runs in the Nation:
    An all-volunteer effort, this 2025 run added Shanksville PA, making the second-annual the U.S.'s Longest Relay in 2025, 4th longest in the world. Several runners completed marathon distances daily for five consecutive days, carrying the custom 9/11 "Run for Remembrance" flag across six states.
Routing Summary
  • Day 1-2: Shanksville, PA to DC via MD and VA

  • Day 3-5: DC through MD, PA, NJ, and into NYC

  • Day 6 on 9/11/25: Flag-bearing finishers — wearing red, white, blue – arrived at Ground Zero for a moving tribute on the 24th anniversary of Sept. 11.

Why We Run

"While many of our runners are military and veterans who were called to serve because of 9/11, other runners and crew are teachers, law enforcement, and professionals from across the spectrum—all committed to honoring the sacrifices made on September 11," said Eric Danesi, 9/11 Run co-organizer.

"We chose Tunnel to Towers for their support of heroes' families. We continue to be inspired by firefighter Stephen Siller who ran through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel on 9/11 to help – leaving behind his wife, Sally, and five children. We are inspired to continue to run in support of T2T's ongoing work paying off mortgages and supporting Gold Star and first responder families," added Navy Capt. Ono Margioni, OTRC co-organizer.
